Journey To The Center of the Sun - Vintage Verne

VII. The Civilization in the Galactic Current

As recorded by Axel Lidenbrock

The Sunship Aurora plunged through the solar gate like a bead of mercury sliding along a wire. The tunnel of plasma widened until it was no longer a tunnel at all, but a river—an immense, radiant river flowing through a darkness that was not empty, but alive.

Filaments of electric force stretched across the void like the roots of some cosmic tree. They pulsed with color—violet, gold, cerulean—each pulse a heartbeat of the universe.

Hans stared without expression, though I saw his knuckles whiten on the railing.

The Professor, meanwhile, was ecstatic.

“Axel,” he cried, “we are inside the galactic current! This is the great artery of the cosmos. Stars are but lanterns hung along its length. We are traveling through the very bloodstream of creation.”

The Aurora drifted along the current, carried by its shimmering tide. Ahead, the river widened into a vast, luminous expanse—a kind of celestial delta.

And there, suspended within the glow, we saw structures.

Not planets. Not asteroids.

Cities.

VIII. The Cities of the Lumenites

They were unlike anything conceived by earthly architecture. Towers of translucent crystal rose like frozen lightning bolts. Bridges of plasma arched between them, humming with gentle resonance. The entire city floated within the current, anchored not by gravity but by electric tension.

As we approached, the structures shifted—reconfiguring themselves like living organisms adjusting to a new visitor.

A platform extended toward us, forming itself from braided filaments of light.

The Professor insisted we land.

Hans insisted we proceed with caution.

I insisted we reconsider entirely.

But the Aurora drifted forward, drawn by a gentle, irresistible pull.

We touched down.

The platform solidified beneath our feet.

And then they appeared.

IX. The Lumenites

They emerged from the crystalline towers like silhouettes stepping out of sunlight. Their bodies were humanoid, but composed of a substance neither flesh nor metal—something like condensed radiance, shaped into form. Their eyes glowed with soft, steady luminescence.

One stepped forward.

When it spoke, its voice was not sound but vibration—felt in the bones, understood in the mind.

Welcome, travelers of the dense world. You have followed the signal. You have entered the Current.

The Professor bowed with theatrical flourish.

“I am Otto Lidenbrock of Hamburg, Earth. These are my companions, Axel and Hans. We received your coded pulses. We built a vessel according to your instructions.”

The being inclined its head.

We are the Lumenites. We dwell within the galactic current. We sent the signals so that your kind might awaken.

“Awaken?” I asked.

The being’s glow brightened.

Your world sleeps beneath the illusion of gravity alone. You see the universe as cold and empty. But it is warm. It is connected. It is alive.

The Professor trembled with joy.

“Then the electric universe—my theory—is true?”

It is more than true. It is the foundation of all things. Stars are nodes. Planets are vessels. Life is the spark that leaps between them.

Hans, ever practical, asked: “Why send message?”

The Lumenite turned to him.

Because the Current is changing. A disturbance grows in the outer filaments. A shadow moves along the cosmic river. We require allies from the dense worlds. You were the first to listen.

The Professor’s eyes gleamed.

“Then we are to assist you?”

You are to see. And once you see, you will choose.

X. The Chamber of Origins

The Lumenites guided us through their city. We passed through corridors of crystal that resonated with our footsteps, producing harmonies like distant choirs. We entered a vast chamber at the heart of the largest tower.

In its center floated a sphere of light—swirling, shifting, alive.

The Lumenite gestured.

This is the Chronicle. The memory of the Current. The history of the universe.

Images formed within the sphere.

We saw galaxies as whirlpools of electric force. We saw stars born from knots of plasma. We saw civilizations rising along the filaments like flowers blooming on a vine.

And then we saw something else.

A dark shape moving through the current—absorbing light, severing filaments, leaving void in its wake.

The Professor gasped.

“Axel… Hans… that is no natural phenomenon.”

The Lumenite’s voice vibrated with solemn gravity.

It is the Umbra. A force that consumes the Current. It approaches your star. Slowly. Inevitably.

I felt my heart tighten.

Hans simply nodded, as if accepting a storm on the horizon.

The Professor straightened, his voice firm.

“What must we do?”

The Lumenite extended a hand of light toward the Aurora.

Your vessel is the first of its kind on Earth. But it can be more. We will show you how to transform it. How to arm it. How to ride the Current beyond your Sun. You will carry a message home. And you will decide whether your world will stand with us.

The Professor’s face shone with determination.

“Axel,” he said, “we have journeyed to the center of the Earth. We have journeyed to the center of the Sun. Now we shall journey to the center of the galaxy.”

Hans nodded once.

I swallowed hard.

And the Lumenites began their work.
